I am mentoring a recent high school graduate and I asked him recently what was his most valuable asset. He gave me a list of his accomplishments and then I told him time was his most valuable asset. It is the only thing he cannot replace once it is gone.
We waste time doing many things. We watch too much television. We talk and text too much on our phones. We sleep too much. We run many places usually accomplishing nothing. Everything in our lives should be done with purpose, nothing wasted, nothing scattered. Time is valuable because we only have so much of it to invest.
I have paid attention to the numbers of people who died recently of all ages. Some tragically due to unforeseen events of nature. Some victims of heinous crimes. Others after fights with illness, and those who have completed their journey and entered into eternity. Many people were accomplished celebrities, athletes, and renown individuals who left their mark in the world. Some were regular people, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, who worked hard to provide for their families. Some used time to their advantage. Some wasted it.
I try not to pay too much attention to time I wasted along my journey. I try to focus on my future and make sure every choice and decision I make is carefully calculated for their best outcomes. I have become overly cautious and choose to do only what I am inspired to do, not just what I am required to do. The requirements of life never go away, paying bills, maintaining your health, family drama and family matters. As we get older, there is much more to life than the every day routine. Are you making an impact? Are you investing in others? What accomplishments really matter?
Are you doing what matters most?
I encourage you reading this blog to focus on the things that matter, the plans and people who need you to do what you do best. Give the Internet, television social media, a rest and look for ways to maximize the use of your time. Work to get a return on that investment and be confident that you will reap what you sow, especially if it blesses the lives of others.
