The election is over. Thanksgiving has passed. Christmas is a few weeks away. The New Year, 2025, is upon us. What is on the agenda for 2025?
The new year promises to be filled with the unexpected, but that is no excuse not to prepare. Goals and priorities for your business should be lined up, completed this summer. If you are just planning for 2025, you are late. I frequently tell leaders, to be early is on time. To be on time is late. To be late is unacceptable.
Procrastination is the biggest obstacle to progress. Never put off for tomorrow what should be done today. Stop putting things on the back burner. To get to it when you get to it is a poor leadership attitude. Failure to set your priorities in order is a sure way to waste time and resources You cannot do everything at once, but you can itemize your daily tasks so the most important things are done consistently. Here are tips to setting goals and priorities;
Categorize your commitments by personal, family, and work in that order.
Chronicle the amount of time you devoted to each this year.
Chronicle the amount of "dead time" you spent this year. Dead time includes watching television, surfing the Internet, hanging out with friends, blaming people for your mistakes, etc.
Review your work task list and make sure you have properly delegated assignments to the appropriate people on your team.
Set goals in the following increments, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year. Make sure these goals follow the SMART model of goal setting. Put benchmarks in the goals to make sure you achieve them.
Get rid of people who bring no value to your life. Surround yourself with motivated, ambitious, driven, and successful people who emulate the achievements you desire. Stop allowing well intentioned relationships to suck the air out of your atmosphere.
Use technology to assist in managing goals and priorities. Put important dates on your calendar. Have important phone numbers and email addresses in your directory. value important relationships and stay connected.
Be honest about what you do and do not want to be committed to. If you don't want to do it, or can't, be upfront with people who are asking. Don't lead people on or over extend yourself when you know you are already at capacity.
Be diligent. Keep kicking the milk, even if you feel overwhelmed sometimes.
January is too late to plan. If you have not set goals, start now. You should be planning for 2026. Get busy. Time is your most valuable asset and it is not waiting for you to see its value.
